Burn victim, Michael Brewer
One of the scariest things in the world (to me anyway) is to have my own friends turn on me. What I mean by that is more like stealing money or a boyfriend or just never speaking to me for no apparent reason. What happens when your “friend” causes you bodily harm for $40?? We could ask 15-year old Michael Brewer of Deerfield Beach, FL, but he’s in the hospital right now suffering from 2nd degree burns on more than 65% of his body. Who could do such a thing you ask? Well it was his friends. That’s right his friends. On Monday October 12th after school, 5 teenagers surrounded Brewer, poured rubbing alcohol on him and then set him on fire.

Why such an extreme? Apparently Brewer owed one of the suspects $40 for a video game and decided to steal his father’s bike in retaliation. Brewer reported the bike stolen and the suspect was arrested the night before the attack. In retaliation, the suspect got 4 others to join him at Brewer’s apartment complex where they taunted him yelling, “He’s a snitch, he’s a snitch” and “pour it on him.” Before another kid proceeded to throw the running alcohol on Brewer and set him on fire. A witness used a fire extinguisher to put out the flames, and Brewer jumped into the complex’s swimming pool to save himself.

Crazy huh? Even more horrible… a couple of the kids were witnessed laughing about the attack before they were arrested.

Valerie Brewer, mother of victim“Our country, our world, needs to wake up and see what is going on with our children,” said the victim’s mother, Valerie Brewer. “They need to do something. This has got to stop. It’s not just my son. It’s everybody’s children. This could happen to somebody else and God forbid – I don’t wish this agony and torture on anybody. We have got to do something to make this violence stop today.” All 5 victims range from 13 t0 15-years old. And a couple of them had even slept over Brewer’s house!  It’s a frightening thought to think that you can’t even trust the neighborhood kids down the block.

The good news is that Michael is expected to survive and make a full recovery. If you would like to donate to Michael Brewer’s recovery, you can do so through this link.

Cold Medicine Abuse
When Sally Harpold walked into the local pharmacy to purchase cold medicine back in March, she never imagined that she would be arrested for a Class-C misdemeanor. But that is exactly what happened 4 months after purchasing Zyrtec-D and Mucinex-D cold medicines for her family.

How is it illegal to purchase cold medicine?

Indiana law 35-48-4-14.7 restricts the sale of ephedrine and pseudoephedrine (PSE) products to no more than 3.0 grams within any 7-day period. You read right, it is ILLEGAL to buy a specific amount of cold medicine in 80% of this country. 41 states in the U.S. have this law or something very similar in the books. Unfortunately for Sally, that’s exactly what happened when she went to purchase cold medicine for her sick daughter and husband. The “crime” carries a sentence of up to 60 days in jail and up to a $500 fine. Scary thought huh?

Cold Medicine Abuse Law

Is cold medicine abuse running rampant in the U.S.?

This law was written to prevent methamphetamine abuse. Pseudoephedrine is a key ingredient in meth, which can come from common allergy and cold medicines found in any local pharmacy. To combat the rampant rise of meth use – particularly in the Midwest, laws like these were passed. According to the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA), most of this country’s meth does not come from garage laboratories in the Midwest, but from “superlabs” in California and Mexico. These labs smuggle pseudoephedrine from Mexico and Canada and use it to manufacture street methempamphetamine, which they then distribute all over the country. Allergy and cold and medicines have nothing to do with it. Once again a small bandage attempting to cover up a BIG boo boo.

Who suffers the most from this little bandage? Innocent citizens like Sally Harpold, who only wanted to help out her sick family. So beware when purchasing cold medicines this cold and flu season. You’ll never know when a police officer will knock on your door to arrest you… for being sick.
